CDC Reports a 19% Increase in Cancer Survival Rates from 2001-2007

11 March 2011

The CDC has released a new report stating that between 2001 and 2007 there has been a 19% increase in the number of cancer survivors.  This amounts to 11.7 million people, and is wonderful news for those of us who devote our time to treating and educating about disease.

The reason for this increase is primarily due to better screening methods and more advanced treatment options.  The fact that people are educated more now than ever about cancer and the risks caused by leading an unhealthy lifestyle also plays a part in this.  There are educational materials accessible to everyone these days, and I’m happy to see that the information that us doctors make available is being put to good use.

Over 2.2 million of those cancer survivors listed in the report suffered from prostate cancer.  That is a huge number of lives saved, and as new advancements in robotic surgery, screening methods, and new treatment options become available I hope to see an even larger increase in the coming years.  I’ve made it my goal to be at the forefront of technology when it comes to treating my prostate cancer patients and I’m excited for advancements that can lead to more lives being saved.

I would like to stress though, as wonderful as it is to see a growing number of survivors, it is important that people do what they can to prevent cancer in the first place.  As mentioned above, people really need to avoid unhealthy lifestyle choices.  This means no smoking, avoid alcohol, stay away from foods high in fat, sugar, salt and eat foods high in fiber.  Exercise at least 30 minutes per day and watch your weight – studies have shown a correlation between being overweight and developing cancer.  Additionally, talk to your doctor about any risk factors you may have for developing various forms of cancer, and if you fall into a high risk group be sure to get screened regularly.

If you have any tips for readers on how to stay active and healthy to prevent cancer, please leave a comment below.
